York Real Estate Information

York is a medium sized community situated in the southwestern portion of the state of Maine. York has a population of approximately twelve thousand nine hundred residents, and is technically considered a town of the state. York is located along the Gulf of Maine, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. York is an independent community as well as serving as an umbrella region for the villages of York Beach, Cape Neddick, and York Village. York is considered to be a part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area, and has a relatively low population density. York encompasses a total area of approximately fifty seven thousand and two thirds square miles, including just less than three square miles of surface water.

The area which is now considered York was originally known as Agamenticus, which literally means “beyond the hill little cove”, a name which was taken from an Abenaki Indian term for the York River. Non-Native American settlers first began to arrive in the region around the year sixteen thirty eight, and dubbed the region Bristol and subsequently Gorgeana before arriving at the current name of the community. York had a central role in the French and Indian Wars as well as the Revolutionary War, and served as a central trading center for the state of Maine and New England at large. York is now noted for being a popular summer destination for tourists, who are especially attracted to the scenic beauty and recreational value of the community.

York is home to a number of architecturally significant structures, including a number of examples of Shingle Age buildings. Some notable residents of York throughout the years include Christopher Cassidy, Emerson Baker, May Sarton, Richard Forester, and Rufus McIntire. The educational needs of York are met primarily by the York School Department, which encompasses the Village Elementary School, Coastal Ridge Elementary School, York Middle School, and York High School. Recreational points of interest in and around York include the York Golf and Tennis Club, York Beach, Camp Eaton, the Ledges Golf Club, and the York's Wild Kingdom Zoo and Fun Park.
